|Chinese Award-winning actress Gong Li was born on the 31st of December 1965 in Shenyang, China. Li was first discovered by actor-director Zhang Yimou while she was still a student at Central Academy of Drama and offered her to star in "Red Sorghum", which was his first film as a director. She received numerous awards and nominations in several more Zhang Yimou films. She became famous for her role in the Oscar-nominated film "Raise the Red Lantern" and was awarded "Best Actress" at the 1992 Venice Film Festival for her role in "The Story of Qiu Ju". Li was also acknowledged for her role in "Farewell My Concubine" and was given a New York Film Critics Circle award. Her first movie debut in Hollywood was in the epic drama "Memoirs of a Geisha" in 2005 and since then appeared in several American movies including "Chinese Box", "Miami Vice", "Hannibal Rising" and most recently "Shanghai" opposite John Cusack. In 1996, Li got married to Singaporean businessman Ooi Hoe Soeng, but got divorced in June 2010.||
