| Award-winning English actress Dame Helen Mirren was born under the name Helen Lydia Mironoff on the 26th of July 1945 in West London. She started her acting career at age eighteen when she was accepted at the National Youth Theatre and did several plays. From NYT, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company where she first starred in the 1970 John Goldschmidt documentary film "Doing Her Own Thing" which was made for ATV. Mirren was nominated twice for Broadway's Tony Award as Best Actress in a Play for "A Month in the Country" in 1995 and for "August Strindberg's Dance of Death" in 2002. Mirren also starred in numerous films including "Gosford Park" and "Calendar Girls". She was the first actress to portray three British queens in different films and television series which won her several acting awards including a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award, among many others. Mirren is also famous for her role as detective Jane Tennison in the award winning television drama "Prime Suspect" where she won three consecutive BAFTA awards for Best Actress from 1992 to 1994. Mirren has been married to American director Taylor Hackford since 1997. |
