| Mya Marie Harrison, or better known simply as Mya, was born on October 10, 1979. What inspired her career in music was mostly her father who was an R&B performer. Mya, who started her job as a small-time dancer, took violin lessons when she was 8, and that was how her music passion began. She only returned to the craft of dancing when she went to NYC to study at the Dance Theater in Harlem, where she discovered that famous dance teacher, Savion Glover, was part of the institute's faculty. With the approval of Glover, she was given a solo performance in the Kennedy Center final presentation. A few years later, Mya's music career started, thanks to the convincing power of her father. This talented woman had her big break when Haqq Islam, the CEO and President of the well-known University of Music who went to their house just to hear her voice live in person, discovered her. In 1998, she released her debut album that she recorded with famed artists like Missy Elliot and Babyface. |
